About Us
Cusack Garvey is a dynamic firm of Chartered Certified Accountants and Chartered Tax Advisers that offers both traditional accounting services and value added solutions to local and international companies, individuals, self-employed persons and company directors.
Cathal is a Fellow member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and a member of the Irish Tax Institute. He has represented ACCA on the CRO’s Accountants Forum, the CCABI’s Technical Co-ordinating Committee, and the forum on anti-money laundering, and also received the Accountant of the Year award from ACCA Ireland.
He has been a Regulatory Assessor for ACCA, a member of the Government High Level Group on Business Regulation, has lectured on a variety of accountancy topics, and has contributed to ACCA publications.
He established Cusack Garvey to focus on providing “big firm advice in a small firm environment”, and is the Irish accounting representative of MSI Global Alliance of Independent Legal & Accounting Firms.
With over 30 years’ experience in practice in both Ireland and the UK, his range of expertise includes advising individuals and business owners on the tax impact of decisions, tax planning for non-resident individuals, the financial and exit plans of businesses, acquisitions, disposals, succession, and retirement planning.
Cathal is a registered auditor and is the designated auditor for commercial businesses and charities.
He is interested in a wide range of music and is a director of Music Network. While accountancy was a second choice to playing guitar for a living, it was the better decision.
Ken is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA), a member of the Irish Tax Institute (AITI CTA) and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). He is a Registered Auditor and holds a Degree (BA Law and Accounting) from the University of Limerick.
He currently holds the following appointments: ACCA Global Forum for Taxation in London, Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies in Ireland (CCAB-I) – Taxation Committee, Tax Administration Liaison Committee (TALC) – Direct and Capital Taxes Committee, Chairman of the MSI Global Alliance – International Tax Committee.
Ken has over 25 years experience in Practice in the areas of taxation, business advisory, forensic accountancy, dispute resolution, and crypto-currencies. He previously worked in the agri-food, transportation and logistics sectors.
His specialist areas are private clients and family offices, shareholder and family dispute resolution. He also works extensively with healthcare, medical and dental professionals and is regarded as an expert in this field.
Ken’s goals are the shared objectives of ensuring his Private and Business clients absolutely minimise their exposure to taxation in a fair and equitable manner, while safeguarding their interests by keeping them fully tax compliant.
He was the lead tax adviser on the landmark Capital Acquisitions Tax case Deane v The Revenue Commissioners [2018] IEHC 519. Revenue denied a claim for the Dwelling House Exemption from Inheritance Tax. He took the case to the Tax Appeals Commission (TAC) where he was successful but Revenue appealed the TAC decision to the High Court. He was ultimately successful in The High Court where Costello, J ruled in favour of the Plaintiff.
He previously sat on the Irish Tax Institute Branch Network – Large Cases Division and the CCAB-I Business Law Committee. He previously lectured in taxation and worked for a time in the legal profession.
